I like how Keichii’s mom says, “Rena’s come to get you” as opposed to “Rena came to pick you up.” (At least as far as The-Triad’s translation is concerned) His mother has no idea that her words have such a terrible double meaning. Darlin, the girl isn’t here to walk your son to school, she’s more than likely there to chop him up into itty bitty pieces or, at the very least, make him go a little more nuts.
Why does the police officer tell Keichii so much? It doesn’t feel right. I hope the writers have some real reason for an officer of the law to divulge so much information to a young teenaged boy.
However, it’s through this conversation with Keichii that we learn that all of the weird deaths are connected to the girls in one way or another.
So, is being born in Hinamizawa the link? Do they do something to the kids when they’re young that turns them into homicidal maniacs? Maybe some kind of ritual involving Oyashiro-sama… Rena herself apparantly said that Oyashiro-sama stands by her bed every night and looks down upon her. Ultra-creepy! Gah! Who IS Oyashiro and WHY does he want an army of psycho cutsey girls? It’s driving me nuts. I need to know!!
Is Keichii connected to the dam somehow? Is this a town-wide conspiracy against outsiders? (which maybe would explain the white van.)
Is what’s happening really so bad that it would make someone wake up in the morning and think, “I know what I need to do”, and then go grab a baseball bat. Hmm, but I don’t know if he meant I need a baseball bat so I can kill them, or to protect myself. STILL! Protecting himself with a bat would mean at the very least physically hurting them, and that’s not exactly sane…
One thing that would support the Keichii is just a paranoid schizophrenic theory is the fact that he skipped school, stopped walking with the girls to school, and avoided club. Isolation a is great factor in heightening paranoia.
Oh, and the fact that they’re SO chipper about the ohagi and finding the pin, makes the switch from genki-psycho wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy creepier.
You know, if it turns out Keichi imagined everything, I’m going to be really pissed off.
Side note: Does anyone else think Oishi’s big pink phone is stupid looking?

I am torn between choosing which Fansub to watch. From past experience, I would prefer to get it from [Ayu], but they are currently only at Ep03, when the raw is already at Ep05.
For Ep03 and Ep04, I chose to watch the [wind] fansub, which is decent. For keepers though, I am getting [Ayu] as well.
As for what he is going to use the bat for… you will get to see it again in Ep04.
Out of curiosity, I am wondering whether you know the planned format for this series?
Cheers.

Personally, I prefer Triad’s releases, though Ayu is decent too. I get wind if I’m really impatient. But I have so much else to watch these days that I don’t mind waiting for Triad.
I know what he uses the bat for (you can tell from ep 1). I’m just wondering if beating them with it was his intention right from the time he first decided to pick it up, or if he just lost control because he’s pretty much going insane. The first option would be much more disturbing, I think.
As for the format of the show, I read somewhere that each arc is 4 episodes, so from episode 5 we’ll start a new arc that I think is going to be from someone else’s point of view. Don’t quote me on that, though.

That is more or less the case. Each arc is basically a reload with a different ending. It is up to the audience to figure out the mystery.
I was just asking because I wanted to avoid spoiling too much since you are only on Ep03.

I don’t think each arc is a ‘reload’. Episode 5 seems to take place prior to episode 1. I won’t say anymore at this time to avoid spoiling.
I was originally going to wait for Triad’s versions, but I just can’t wait for that, so I’m watching the wind version and then using Triad as my “keep” versions to rewatch later.

It is, basically, a reload. Anyone who has ever played a dating game or visual novel (like what this is based on) will get the idea. In that kind of game there is normally an opening stretch which is always the same, and depending on your choices during this section the plot will focus on different characters, often becoming vastly different.
Normally what they do with this kind of adaption is focus on the main ‘cover’ characters story (like Saber in Fate/Stay Night or Misuzu in Air) and integrate elements from the other characters stories where they won’t interfere too much. Due to the way the games story develops, they appear to have decided to do something more interesting with Higurashi - its basically repeating the same period up to the festival, all from the point of view of Keichii, but each set of episodes cover a different path from the game - the first arc I’m guessing is Rena, and the second arc is Mion, so the third will probably be Rika or the other girl. Its only by piecing together information from all of them you’ll be able to work out what the heck is going on.
I have to say, I think its absolute genius in terms of structure, I really do.

hey came across your blog about Higurashi and was wondering if you knew anything about an english translated version of the manga? I’ve been searching around and haven’t found anything and wondered if it even existed

Thanks for stopping by Sarah. Unfortunately, I have no idea if Higurashi’s manga has been licensed/ will be released in English. I’m sure a quick google search might help you out though.

Heya Ren,
I just wanted to leave you a comment here to let you know about my new blog. I’ve actually taken my old blog and moved it to a new site, and I made a new one at the same site to try and start making some money from my blog skin and template designs. I’ve missed you. I’m going to have to go digging to see if I can find your number, and if I can find it, I’ll call you soon. We’ll be moving to GA around the 23rd of September, and I’m not sure how long we’ll be out of communication. When I get ready to leave, I can give you our virtual phone number (thanks to Vonage) that you can at least leave a message on if you need to reach me. Take care, talk to you soon.
